Kundalini yoga

Kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan makes uses of breath, mudras (hand positions), mantra, eye focus, physical exercise, body locks, meditation and relaxation to balance body, mind and soul.

A class has a duration of 1,5 hours and typically consists of warm up exercises, a kriya (a set of exercises that is put together with a specific effect in mind), relaxation and a meditation, in addition to tuning in and out before and after class.

  • balances the glandular system
  • improves the immune system
  • improves circulation
  • expands lung capacity
  • increases flexibility
  • calms the mind

It also has a therapeutic effect and can clear subconscious mind patterns that impact thought patterns and behaviour.

Kundalini yoga is also called the yoga of awareness. Kundalini refers to the energy in our lower spine, and the kriyas are designed to raise this blocked energy. When this happens we become more aware and conscious of our life choices, and we get an experience of our soul. This can be quite transformational.

In Kundalini yoga the most important thing is your experience. It goes right to your heart. No words can replace that experience. Your mind may accept the words or it may not, but your consciousness will not accept just words. Yogi Bhajan

Kundalini yoga was kept a secret and taught to selected individuals until Yogi Bhajan taught it openly and brought it to the West in 1968.
